Star Battle Tutor teaches Star Battle puzzles with logic. Here are answers to the common questions. If yours isn't here, email john@johnhazel.com.

Importing a screenshot

What can I import?

A screenshot or photo of a Star Battle grid from any app, website, book or newspaper. Make sure the whole grid is in the picture. Tap Import a screenshot on the home screen and choose the image.

The import misread a border.

Pick the region's color under the board, then tap or drag the cells to fix it. Above the board, the tutor tells you when the layout has exactly one solution, which is how you know it's right.

It got the size or star count wrong.

Use the Grid and Stars steppers under the board. The tutor re-reads the image at the new size.

Can it bring in my progress?

Yes. Turn on "Bring in my stars and X's" before you tap Start solving.

Hints

How do hints work?

Tap Hint once to see where to look. Tap again for the technique's name. Tap Show me to watch the reasoning step by step, then Apply.

It says my marks don't fit.

One or more of your stars or X's disagrees with the puzzle's only solution, so hints would lead you astray. Tap Clear them, or find them yourself.

It says its techniques are stuck.

A few very hard puzzles need logic beyond its 11 techniques. It can reveal one star, clearly marked as not logic.

Difficulty

How is difficulty rated?

The tutor solves the puzzle with its techniques, easiest first. The rating, from Gentle to Fiendish, comes from the hardest technique the puzzle needs.

What does "Beyond logic" mean?

The puzzle has one solution, but the tutor's techniques can't reach it. That's rare in well-made puzzles.
